Every month, thousands of people stroll through Lancaster enjoying First Friday, an evening of art, music, food and special promotions at more than 100 downtown venues. Merchants say the event not only showcases the city's thriving arts and cultural scene but also has a major economic impact.

Last month, the upstart Pariah Vineyard & Winery planted 810 vines in four grape varieties on a 1.5-acre site in Jackson Township, Dauphin County. The business is owned by Harrisburg residents Derrick Michael and Heather Zellers. Michael, 29, a graduate of Upper Dauphin Area High School, said the plan is to build a production facility — hopefully within the next year — on the larger 26-acre tract. It will take about three years until Pariah’s grapes are ready to harvest, he said. Until then, production could begin with grapes purchased from other growers, he said. Pariah also plans to make different varieties of mead, or honey wine.
