Construction on the 28,000-square-foot Evita M. Allen Center for Academic Excellence began in May 2011 and was completed in late August.
The energy-efficient facility contains the school's administrative offices, a multimedia library and research center, a new computer lab and flexible collaborative classrooms, according to a news release. It also retains historic spaces throughout the facility.
Creek Hill Nursery of Manheim created the green roof in conjunction with Derck & Edson Associates of Lititz, using the LiveRoof tray system.
Steve Sproles, a partner at Derck & Edson, said trays often come premixed, but this roof was custom designed to feature waves of color and plants that flower in different seasons, as it is easily visible from the school's library.
The roof will help improve air quality and reduce and purify runoff, Sproles said. Although the roof is not large, he said, "It's a nice illustration of what you can do."
Chambers & Associates Inc. of Manheim designed the center and Keystruct Construction Inc. of Manchester Township built it. Erb Brothers Landscaping Inc. of Penn Township handled landscaping.
Linden Hall is the nation's oldest independent boarding and day school for girls.
