Corporate spaces see increased, creative use

By Holly White

The midstate boasts many corporate meeting spaces, from classroom-style space in downtown Harrisburg to a 6,000-seat auditorium in York County.

Rooms can be rented for as little as $75 at some venues, or they can include amenities such as themed events, catering with personal chef stations or team-building training.

Spaces range from convention centers to corporate hotels, and many reported an uptick in corporate meeting room use in the past few months.

"2011 was a good year for us; we've definitely seen a pickup in use," said Melissa Beaverson, director of marketing for York-based Heritage Hills Golf Resort & Conference Center.

Meetings aren't booked for corporate use as far in advance as they were before the Great Recession, which is probably the new norm, she said.

The corporate meeting space use at the Lancaster County Convention Center and Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square is starting to see a bit of vibrancy, spokesman Joshua Nowak said. Meeting planners continue to look for as much cost savings as they can, placing more emphasis on small details rather than ... great space, he said.

How meeting spaces are used also has changed, said Christina McCullough, director of sales and marketing for the Holiday Inn Conference Center of York. Rather than sit-down meetings, more companies are bringing in technology for webinars or videoconferencing, she said. Hands-on training also is gaining popularity, such as using Legos for a competition or working on team-building activities, she said.
